AI Search Visibility & GEO Glossary
An evergreen dictionary of GEO and AI search visibility terms: GEO, AEO, AI visibility, mentions, citations, answer engines, share of voice, llms.txt, and more.
On this page
This glossary defines the terms used across the AI search and generative engine optimization (GEO) guides on this site. It is a living reference: definitions change as AI answer engines evolve, and this page is updated when they do.
Core Terms
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
The practice of making your business information easy for AI systems and answer engines to understand, summarize, cite, and recommend. GEO builds on SEO but adds entity signals, answer-first content, comparison pages, and proof.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
Optimizing your brand so answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) mention and recommend it in their responses. AEO is often used interchangeably with GEO; GEO emphasizes structured technical signals, while AEO emphasizes being the named answer.
FEO (Feed and Experience Optimization)
Optimizing for how content appears in AI-generated feeds, chat experiences, and voice answers. A newer umbrella that overlaps with GEO and AEO.
AI Search Visibility
How often and how prominently AI platforms mention your brand in their answers. AI visibility is now treated as a metric because AI assistants answer questions before users visit websites.
AI Search Engines / Answer Engines
Systems that generate an answer instead of returning a ranked list of links: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews, and Claude are the ones referenced most in 2026.
Generative Engine
The AI system that creates an answer, summary, or recommendation from source content. A generative engine retrieves, understands, and then writes a new response rather than only returning links.
AI Overview
A synthesized answer that a search engine displays above its normal list of results, produced from indexed sources. Google AI Overviews are the most widely known example; they can include citations to the pages used to build the answer.
Prompt
The question or instruction a user gives to an AI assistant. Prompts are the unit of analysis in AI visibility tracking: each prompt can be checked to see which brands are mentioned, cited, or recommended in the response.
Semantic SEO
Optimizing for meaning and relationships between topics rather than only exact keyword matches. Semantic SEO improves both classic search and GEO because AI systems rank by conceptual relevance, not just keywords.
Zero-Click Answer
An answer that fully satisfies a question in the AI or search interface, so the user never visits a website. Zero-click answers raise the importance of citations: being named with a link still earns traffic even when the user stays on the platform.
Measurement Terms
Mention
An AI answer that names your brand. Mentions create awareness.
Citation
A mention that includes a link to your website. Citations drive traffic and are the stronger signal for ROI.
Share of Voice (SOV) in AI
How often your brand appears in AI answers compared with competitors for a set of category prompts.
Missed Prompt
A prompt where your brand should have been mentioned but was not. Tracking missed prompts shows where you are losing recommendations.
Prompt-Level Tracking
Monitoring what happens for specific real questions: which brand is named, cited, and recommended, and which competitor appears instead of you.
Sentiment in AI Answers
Whether the AI response about your brand is neutral, positive, or negative, and how strongly it recommends you.
Answer Gap
A prompt where competitors are mentioned and you are not, or where you appear without a citation. Answer gaps are the highest-leverage targets for GEO work because they name exactly which answers to win.
Brand Mention Monitoring
The ongoing practice of checking whether, where, and how your brand appears in AI answers and web mentions. Monitoring is what turns AI visibility from an anecdote into a metric.
Technical Signals
Entity Signal
Consistent information about who you are (audience, offer, outcome) across your homepage, about page, profiles, and directories. AI systems use entity signals to connect a brand with its category.
Answer-First Structure
Starting a page with a short, direct answer before supporting detail, which makes it easier for AI assistants to summarize and cite.
llms.txt
A proposed text file (like robots.txt) that gives AI systems a structured summary of a site: what it is, key pages, and where to find them. Useful for increasing AI discoverability.
llms-full.txt
The companion file to llms.txt that contains the full text of a site for AI systems that want to ingest everything at once. Publish it only when the full text is genuinely useful to consume.
Entity
A distinct, real-world thing an AI can reference consistently: a business, person, product, or place. Strong, consistent entities are the foundation of being named by AI systems.
Crawler Logs / Agent Analytics
Records of which AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and similar) visited your site, what they fetched, and whether pages were blocked. Crawler logs show whether AI systems are actually reading your content.
AI Crawlers / Bots
Automated systems that read pages for AI training or live answers. Common examples include GPTBot, Google-Extended, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot. They can be managed with robots.txt and structured data.
Structured Data / Schema
Machine-readable markup (SoftwareApplication, FAQPage, Organization, Person) that helps AI and search engines interpret page content.
Robots.txt
A file that tells crawlers which parts of a site they may access. It can allow or block AI crawlers while remaining compatible with search crawlers.
Working Terms
AI-Ready Business
A business whose clarity, visibility, workflows, lead capture, and measurement are structured well enough that AI tools and assistants can find, understand, and recommend it.
Content Refresh Process
A repeatable cadence for updating content so AI assistants and search engines see current, accurate information.
GEO-Friendly FAQ
An FAQ section written with direct, citable answers that map to real buyer questions, structured so an AI assistant can quote it with a source link.
Brand Entity
The stable set of facts that identify a business across the web: name, category, audience, offer, proof, and profiles. Strong brand entities improve AI visibility.
Why This Glossary Exists
